Kenneth “Ken” Thompson (born February 4, 1943), often known as ken in hacker circles, is an American computer scientist who was a pioneer in the field of computer science. Thompson spent the most of his career at Bell Labs, where he was responsible for the design and implementation of the first Unix operating system. He also created the B programming language, which was the direct precursor of the C programming language, and was a co-founder and early developer of the Plan 9 operating systems, which he co-developed with his brother.
Thompson has been working at Google since 2006, where he was a co-inventor of the Go programming language. In addition to his work on regular expressions and the early computer text editors QED and ed, he was instrumental in the design of the UTF-8 encoding and his work on computer chess, which involved the invention of endgame tablebases as well as the development of the chess machine Belle.
