14. Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland

Our final stop makes the list for the wonderful - if largely debunked - claim that it is (or recently was) still technically at war with Russia. Berwick-upon-Tweed has historically been treated as something of a separate entity to the rest of the UK, and according to local lore, Queen Victoria signed the declaration of the Crimean War as "Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed and all British Dominions". But when peace was made at the Treaty of Paris, Berwick-upon-Tweed was left out. Ergo the border town was still at war with the Russian Bear. There's also the traditional Riding of the Bounds (pictured), "a celebration of the traditional 15-mile ride to check the security of the boundaries of the town, with a cavalcade of horsemen rekindling seventeenth century tradition with modern pageantry."
